Output Expectations on a Balcony

Based on PVGIS data for central England, a south-facing 800W system at optimal 30–35 degree tilt generates 650–700 kWh per year. Vertical railing mounting (90 degrees) — the most common balcony installation — generates approximately 70% of this, around 455–490 kWh per year. East or west-facing balconies generate roughly half the south-facing output. North-facing balconies are rarely worthwhile.

The key variable is self-consumption. Without battery storage, if you are out during the day you may only self-consume 30–35% of generation — giving real savings of £35–£60/year from a balcony-mounted 800W system. Working from home or adding battery storage transforms this to £90–£120/year.

Talking to Your Landlord

For grid-connected systems, you will need landlord permission for any external installation. Useful points to raise: no permanent structural modifications needed for railing-mounted systems, fully reversible, no impact on the building structure, and it reduces your energy bills (relevant given current high electricity prices). For portable power stations, no landlord permission is required.

July 2026: What Changes for Renters

The BSI product standard expected in July 2026 will allow certified plug-in solar kits to be self-installed into a standard 3-pin socket without an electrician. This removes the main practical barrier for renters — the £150–£400 professional installation cost. Lidl and John Lewis are expected to stock certified kits around this time. Renters will still need to check tenancy agreements and landlord permission for external panel mounting, but the grid-connection element will be as simple as plugging in a kettle.
